Description NSW Flannel Flower Actinotus helianthii The Flannel Flower is the floral emblem of the state of New South Wales. It is a herbaceous, shrub that is often small but can reach 1 metre high with the right conditions. The leaves have deep lobes, grey and velvety to touch, a quality that is also evident in the flowers, which are small and occur in clusters at the ‘centre of the flower’. The flowers are surrounded by petal-like bracts that are white with greenish tips and having the appearance of a daisy. Flowering occurs in spring through early summer and is usually profuse after a bushfire. The Flannel Flower is not a long-lived plant, but is relatively easy to cultivate, preferring poor, sandy soils or raised beds. Drainage must be very good as they take exception to ‘wet feet’. Once established they will often ‘self-sow’ and new plants will replace the older, original ones. It is best to germinate the seed with smoke treatment. Smoke treatment is the simple task of sprinkling treated vermiculite over the sown seeds and watering in. Alternatively, some success has been had by setting fire to a mulch layer placed over the sown seedbed to simulate a bushfire but care must be taken that you don’t spark a real bushfire.
