There are some 40 species spread over Central and South America. Because of its origin this plant performs well in hot, humid climates and surprisingly will withstand temperatures down to a few degrees above freezing. Growing to a height of  13-15 cm (5-6 in) with a spread of 23-25 cm (9-10 in), it has a mounded habit and is suitable for borders, pots and containers. Flowering from late Spring through Summer, you can expect the soft, feathery flowers consisting of 5 to 15 tubular florets to be various shades of blue, pink, lavender and white.
